‘If Ghana Passes Anti LGBTQ+ Bill, AIDS Donors Will Stop’ – Ghana AIDS Commission
The Director of Research, Monitoring and Evaluation at Ghana AIDS Commission has stated that Ghana should be prepared to lose all AIDS donations if they pass the anti LGBTQ+ bill.
Mr. Kyeremeh Atuahene stated that the bill in its current state is going to force all donors to withdraw their donations.
He made this known when he appeared before Parliament’s committee holding a public hearing on the LGBTQ+ Bill.
In his submission, he said;
“Donor funding for the HIV response covers the HIV and TB services for men who have sex with men and transgender people.
These health services have nothing to do with the activities the Bill seeks to proscribe but may be construed to be if the Bill is passed in its current form. Donors will [therefore] withdraw their funding if they are criminalized by this Bill.”
Many Ghanaians are of the view that the bill should be passed because being part of the LGBTQ+ community goes against the values of Ghanaian society.
Others too have argued that the consequences are going to be disastrous for Ghana as countries who provide Ghana with some aid will decide to stop.
