Southampton played with much more intent in the second half and the Saints were rewarded with an equalizer as Ben Chilwell clumsily brought down Tino Livramento in the box with James ward prowse expertly converting the resulting penalty.
Southampton were reduced to ten-men in the 75th minute after James Ward Prowse was shown a straight red card after a dangerous foul on Jorginho.
And the blues would take advantage of their numerical strength as Timo Werner tapped in from close range in the 84th minute to restore Chelsea’s lead. Ben Chilwell extended his side’s lead in the 89th minute of the game with the match ending in that manner as the blues secured an impressive 3-1 win.
Earlier in the day, Manchester united hosted Everton at Old trafford in a first game of match week 7.
